Creek, Floods and Old Mines
Excavation contractors in Carnegie work in a borough split by Chartiers Creek, which runs through its center and picks up Campbells Run there. In 2004 Hurricane Ivan flooded the borough, closing or damaging much of the commercial area. Many Carnegie neighborhoods were mined for coal at one time or another. Both facts shape how we plan a dig.
Floodplain lots
Low-lying lots near the creek carry floodplain limits on fill and grading, and groundwater there rises quickly in wet weather. Trenches are kept short and backfilled the same day where we can.
Undermined neighborhoods
Where neighborhoods were mined, we ask about known workings before deep digs or heavy fills.
An older, dense borough
Carnegie peaked at 12,663 residents in 1940 and had 8,134 in 2020, about 5,019 per square mile, at an elevation of 833 feet. The 2000 census counted 4,249 housing units. Many are old enough for lateral replacement and drainage upgrades.
After the flood
Hurricane Ivan's 2004 flood is a reminder of how fast Chartiers Creek can rise. On low lots, we avoid raising grades in ways that push water toward neighbors and keep drains pointed to the storm system.
Main Street
Carnegie's Main Street is a walkable commercial corridor. Residential streets climb from the creek on both sides, so many homes sit on slopes, with runoff heading back down toward the creek and the business district.
Steel mill heritage
The borough's main employers were once steel mills. Older industrial sites and fill can turn up during digs; we sort and haul it as needed.
