Growth Around the Airport

Excavation contractors in Moon Township work 12 miles northwest of Pittsburgh along the Ohio River. Early settlers had to turn broken and hilly ground into farmland, and that terrain still shapes lots today. Pittsburgh International Airport opened here in 1951, and its runways lie largely within the township. Moon grew from 22,290 residents in 2000 to 27,261 in 2020, about 22 percent.

Montour Run and Thorn Run

The 1773 John Meek land grant lay between the Thorn Run and Montour Run valleys, which still drain much of the township. Lots near those valleys can carry floodplain limits and wetter soils.

New and newer homes

Much of the growth is recent, with subdivisions and townhome communities that have builder grading still settling. Drainage correction, patios, pools and garage pads are the common requests.

Roads

I-376 (the Parkway West) and nearby I-79 serve the township, and the Cherrington Parkway extension opened in 2008. Commercial work along those corridors includes pads and drainage.

Builder grading

Newer homes and townhomes in Moon often have yards that have settled since construction, leaving low spots and water against foundations. We regrade, add swales and run downspout lines to stable outlets.

Former shopping center sites

A Walmart supercenter opened in 2016 on the former West Hills Shopping Center site, a reminder that commercial land here gets reworked. Small commercial pads and parking drainage are part of our work along the corridors.

Ohio River lots

Properties near the Ohio River deal with steep banks and floodplain rules. Grading near the river stays within what the floodplain allows.
