Old Homes, Close Lots, Curving Hills
Excavation contractors in Mt. Lebanon work in one of the region's classic streetcar suburbs. The first streetcar line to Pittsburgh opened on July 1, 1901, the first subdivision was laid out that November, and the population exploded from 2,258 in 1920 to 13,403 in 1930. Today 34,075 people live on about 6.08 square miles, roughly 5,600 per square mile. That density means small yards, close neighbors and a lot of careful machine work.
A historic district of 3,341 buildings
The Mt. Lebanon Historic District on the National Register has 3,341 contributing buildings, most built between 1874 and about 1945, in Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, Foursquare, Craftsman and Queen Anne styles. Houses that age often have original clay laterals, stone or block foundations, and grading that has slowly settled toward the walls. Lateral replacements, drainage fixes and additions are the work we see most.
Streets that follow the land
In neighborhoods such as Virginia Manor, streets were designed to follow the natural contours of the land. That gives a lot of homes a front-to-back or side-to-side slope, retaining walls and steps. Runoff from the lot above is a common source of wet basements. Curtain drains, swales and underground downspout lines are usually the fix.
Getting in and out
Narrow driveways, detached garages and mature trees limit access. We use compact equipment, protect walks and driveways with mats, and plan where trucks can stand without blocking a busy street such as Washington Road.
Planning around neighbors
With more than 5,600 people per square mile, nearly every Mt. Lebanon project shares a property line, a driveway or a wall with someone else. Before work starts we agree on the access route, where spoil will sit for the day, and how trucks will load without blocking a neighbor's driveway. Mats protect lawns and walks, and we restore anything disturbed.
Rebuilding patios and walks
Many homes have original concrete patios, walks and steps that have heaved or settled over decades. Removing them and building a new base of compacted stone is often the first step of a hardscape project. We can break out the old concrete, haul it to a recycler and leave a base ready for the mason.
Light rail and tunnels
The Red Line light rail runs beneath Uptown through the Mt. Lebanon Tunnel, and Washington Road carries heavy traffic. Hauling schedules avoid the busiest times on that corridor.

Mt. Lebanon Questions
Can you replace a lateral without wrecking my front yard?
We keep the trench as narrow as safety allows, stockpile topsoil separately and restore the lawn afterward.
Do you work around historic homes?
Yes, with care beside old foundations and walls.
Water from the lot behind floods my yard. What helps?
Catching it uphill, with a curtain drain or a swale, is usually the answer.
Will you tear out an old concrete patio?
Yes. We break it out, haul it and leave a compacted base for the new one.
